Achieving a designer bathroom with equal parts function and flair at an affordable cost is literally at your fingertips!
Here are our 7 contemporary bathroom trends for 2019 that we love.
1. Sensory showers
Forget shelling out hundreds of dollars for a day spa experience. Enjoy the real deal – and a sensory shower experience – at home! Today’s advanced technology really sets the tone for contemporary shower design. Multi-purpose sensory shower sprays, such as the Methven VJet™ Tūroa Shower, allow you to personalise your shower experience, helping you start your day with energy and vitality, and unwind after a long day, too.
So how does this modern sensory shower work? You can set, control or transition your shower spray to suit your mood, from a firm, invigorating shower spray to a gentle, enveloping warmth, a needle-like jet or a super-soft fine mist and everything in between. Your shower becomes more than just a place to splash around and clean yourself – it becomes a truly personal escape where you can think, soothe, recover, prepare, retreat or unwind.
Take your sensory shower experience to the next level and nurture all five senses with scented candles and soft, ambient lighting, soul-nurturing tunes and a cup of your favourite herbal tea and bamboo bathrobe on standby.
2. Matching showers, tapware and accessories
A ‘full design suite’ of matching designer showers, tapware and accessories is a must-have to complete the look for any modern bathroom. Good, high-quality collections marry design with technology, so don’t sacrifice one for the other. Look for a collection that’s made from great materials that will stand the test of time (with a warranty to match!).
3. Metallic finishes
Oh can’t you just hear the modernists, sophisticates and minimalists rejoicing? Yes, the hottest trend (and one that’s here to stay for the long haul) is metallic finishes, from gun-metal grey showers, tapware and accessories to graphite and gold (perfect for those who like a little bling in their bathroom). But, while these metallic collections are ‘simply stunning’, they also work for just about any bathroom style – from the kitschy to the classics, urban industrial, city chic, country charming, Nordic and everything in between.
4. Eco-friendly fit outs and furnishings
Most of us are becoming more aware of our carbon footprint – and making more environmentally friendly choices to minimise our impact on the planet. Bamboo towels, for example, are a great eco-friendly choice. Bamboo grows super-fast, creates less soil damage and requires less water to grow than cotton. It ‘breathes’ like natural fibres such as cotton and linen and feels amazing on our skin.
Placing a plant or two around the bathroom is not only a more environmentally friendly feature than a decorative cotton ball jar, but plants naturally add colour, life (and love!) to a bathroom. Aside from the obvious oxygen release, and carbon dioxide removal, research shows plants – or green spaces – promote happier, healthier, stress-free lives and an overall sense of wellbeing. This kind of makes sense, since we are at-one with nature and our nakedness when we cleanse and shower.
And, while we’re talking ‘shower’, look for water-saving shower heads with a 3 or 4 star Wels water rating (Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme). Not only will you be doing the planet a favour, but you’ll save on water costs too.
Now, let’s not forget our designer AND eco-friendly taps, showers and accessories. Look for a collection that is crafted from high-grade stainless steel, which is both beautiful and durable. Stainless steel is not only valued for its durable properties, but for environmental reasons too – as the manufacturing process doesn’t require chrome-plating which can be harmful for the environment. Additionally, this material may be future collected, reused and repurposed into new products.
5. PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) finishes
We don’t want to get too technical, but bathroom fixtures that use ‘environmentally considerate’ manufacturing processes are a worthy trend movement and worth mentioning. If you only learn one acronym in your new bathroom pursuit, make it PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition). PVD is the coating process (of your stainless steel taps, showers and accessories). Ask if your hardware features it. Not only is PVD durable, but it’s the most eco-friendly coating process available. Basically the PVD coating is applied to your tapware and accessories inside an airtight vacuum chamber, without any toxic ingredients or chemicals to dispose of during or after the process. And the result is superb: a brilliant finish that allows the stainless steel to radiate through while being super strong and durable for excellent wear.
6. Scandi and natural accents
It’s not new, but Scandi bathroom features will still be a big trend for 2019. And when we say big, we mean big in a minimalist kind of way. Rather than full Scandi-design bathrooms, you’ll see minimalist accents mixed with other natural and raw features. Think ‘single Scandi soap dispenser’ with displays like shells, sand and raw woods sitting elegantly alongside stainless steel fixtures.
7. Single lever taps
Single lever mixer taps have become a bathroom fixture (excuse the pun) over recent years for a number of reasons. They are convenient (easy one-handed temperature control and water flow), require less space and are spot-on sleek and simple for minimalists, and, of course less hardware costs less money.
