In a larger kitchen, an all-white palette can risk looking clinical. For this reason, interior designer Jean-Pierre Biasol balanced light cabinetry and benchtops with the breakfast bar’s inky joinery. “That contrast comes together in the island, which is the centrepiece of the whole home,” he says.
Breakfast bar
The family can congregate at the large island bench, and this three-metre show stopper doesn’t disappoint. Thonet bar stools echo the room’s elegant vibe, while stained black American oak-veneer joinery makes an impressive – and functional – contrast to the white finishes in the rest of the kitchen.
Generous slabs of Calacatta ‘Oro’ marble from CDK Stone are used for both the benchtops and the splashback.
Task lights
A trio of Beacon Lighting ‘Jensen’ glass pendants (now discontinued) were chosen for their translucency.
Skylights and flooring
Two large skylights were added to bring in extra light, with engineered American oak flooring grounding the revamped area.
Insider tip
Displaying favourite homewares, photographs, cookbooks and fresh foliage brings warmth and a friendly vibe to a bigger kitchen. In this space, a full-height recessed bookshelf provides a home for cherished collectables, while also keeping clutter off the benchtops.
Butler’s pantry
Accessed via a sliding door, a butler’s pantry houses the microwave and smaller appliances, as well as providing further storage and leading to a laundry beyond. Finished to the same level of elegance as the main part of the kitchen, the room also features Calacatta marble on the benchtops and splashback.
