Looking to trending colours and styles is a great way to bring your home up to date each season. No truer words were ever spoken than when it comes to updating your kitchen, where many of the colours and finishes are fixed stone – sometimes literally!

Even a dated kitchen can be made fresh with a new colour on the cabinetry, fresh paint on the walls and a benchtop vignette that speaks to the hottest new look. Here are five trends to work from with your shopping list in hand.

1. Monochrome

Easy to adopt, a monochrome palette crosses all boundaries of style and cuts the clutter back to the bare essentials. Perfect for older homes that need paring back and brand new builds with a minimal aesthetic.

2. Boho

The trend towards bohemian style is a nod to 1970s style, incorporating elements of handmade. Think woven or wooden serving bowls filled with fruit, plenty of trailing indoor plants and Turkish floor rugs with and mismatched dining chairs nearby.

3. Terrazzo

This classic finish is enjoying a revival and we couldn’t be happier. Brought up to date with larger format flecks, warm pink tones and pops of colour, choose to use it with abandon in a new build for flooring and benchtops, or add it to an existing kitchen with serve ware and accessories.

4. Handcrafted ceramics

Hooray for handmade! Not only is the ceramics movement stronger than ever, even high street and department stores are embracing the trend for handmade ceramics in tableware and every day crockery for the table. Mix and match artisan pieces to stretch the budget or renew your existing collection with an entire set of textured goodness.

5. Oversized pieces

If less is more when decorating, who said anything about size? Bigger is better when it comes to minimal décor in particular and a well-chosen investment of a statement light fitting, mirror or artwork will bring your kitchen to life.
