This kitchen forms part of a new build in Brisbane’s Camp Hill, designed to appeal to young families. The brief was to create a luxurious feel, using functional materials and finishes appropriate for family life. Interior designer Ashley Maddison from AM Interior Studio created an open-plan layout conducive to connection, facilitated by a sizeable island with “ample stool space for entertaining, doing homework or playing a card game”, she says. Lounge Lovers ‘Helena’ bar stools in Tan achieve just that.
Made from rattan and white composite clay, the ‘Chege’ dome pendant lights from Bisque Traders are an understated element, adding texture and depth to the tonal palette. The Robert Gordon ‘Pearl’ wall sconce in Bone adds subtle definition, playing on the lines of the curved wave shelf, which Vivid Joinery Solutions custom-made. A sleek, mess-free environment is the result of ample storage, including a small appliances cupboard, integrated fridge and a walk-in pantry. Ashley then layered in materials, giving a luxe look without sacrificing serviceability. “Luxurious yet practical materials were chosen for the project,” she says. For instance, joinery with an engineered finish was chosen as a durable alternative to timber veneer.
Polytec Woodmatt cabinetry in Coastal Oak is a subtle touch in the kitchen while glossy Stone3 ‘Coco’ subway tiles add movement to the simple palette without detracting from other elements.

With no shortage of curved edges in the space, Ashley successfully pushed the boundaries of conventional design. “I aimed to incorporate curves in unexpected areas,” explains Ashley. “Engaging in a truly experimental approach.” The result is a modern, family-friendly kitchen with both style and substance.
To achieve a monochromatic look that is dynamic, interior designer Ashley Maddison advises: “Choose materials that harmonise tonally with each other. Prioritise significant surfaces such as benchtops, opting for high-quality tap fixtures and appliances.” Her choice for this project was the ‘Elysian’ commercial pull-out kitchen mixer in Brushed Brass from ABI Interiors.
