With his latest TV role as the newest judge on House Rules on Channel Seven bringing him back to Australian shores full time, the HGTV host, designer and author will no longer call California home.
The mid-century modern ‘ranch home’ in Laurel Canyon was originally designed by architects Matlin & Chapman in 1957 and has been Jamie Durie‘s home since he left Australia to peruse a successful career in the United States as an author and TV design show host, including regular appearances on the Oprah Winfrey show.
Jamie has renovated the home during his time in Los Angeles to practice what he preaches and produce the perfect blend of indoor-outdoor lifestyle – flowing living and entertaining spaces between stunning landscaped gardens and original mid-century vintage interior design features, including a dramatic stone fireplace, stucco ceiling with funky pendant lighting hung from sloping ceilings.
The three-bedroom home makes the most of the Californian climate with open plan living and dining areas adjacent to an open kitchen that overlooks an inviting pool and comprehensive outdoor entertaining space seamlessly transitioned from almost every room through sliding or bi-fold doors.
Outside is where Jamie‘s signature of ‘The Outdoor Room‘ philosophy is evident and his skills in landscape architecture really shine, with multiple decks and raised pavilions inviting easy entertaining and relaxation in a welcoming mix of timber, stone textures and bold plantings.
Show-stopping landscape design is everywhere on the property with wood-and-metal oversized planters flanking the street entrance and pool area, where a modern detached studio space offers a spacious home office set up which has no-doubt been the base for his design practice Durie Design (which has won design awards in Singapore, Tokyo, Auckland NZ, Melbourne and Sydney) and writing his best-selling books.
The property was put on the market at the end of last year for almost USD$3million and after a drop in price in January was recently relisted for USD$2,750,000 but has just been withdrawn from sale.
