The Australian Interior Design Awards showcase the best of the best in interior design. In its 14th year, the awards celebrate excellence and innovation across seven primary categories, including Retail Design, Hospitality Design, Workplace Design, Public Design, Installation Design, Residential Design, Residential Decoration.
This year Smart Design Studio won the residential design award for their project, Indigo Slam.
The jury was ‘unable to find fault’ with the home’s impeccable composition. “This project is a private residence, but also hosts events for the client’s art gallery, celebrating unconventional domesticity through dual functionality,” says the jury. The home is ‘defined as much by a sense of a thoughtful restraint, as it is by immaculate detailing’. Indigo Slam was also awarded the Premier Award for Australian Interior Design, making it the only project to collect multiple national gongs.
Central to the design is the abundance of natural light. The stunning staircase is lit by overhead concealed roof lights. The floors are brick-paved and the walls are render-set.
The brief was for Indigo Slam to last 100 years. Materials were selected based on durability such as oversized vertical timber blinds and a steel, glass and concrete façade. Individual spaces in the open-plan layout are defined by screens. Home to an art collector, the finishes are simple and modern allowing the homeowner the flexibility to change the look and feel of the place.
