HB talks about the redesign of Bird in Hand’s LVN restaurant

Interior designer Georgie Shepherd of GSID takes us through LVN in Adelaide’s brilliant new redesign

What was the brief for LVN’s gorgeous new look? “[Owners] Andrew and Susie approached us with this idea to create LVN. Named after their daughter, Lalla Victoria Nugent (LVN), the vision was to develop a new high-end restaurant. A space that was warm and inviting, an extension of their home, and an open kitchen where the theatrics of the kitchen were on show!”

And how did you bring that brief to life? “We began by delving into what it was that this space was to be, what connection it had to the winery and what story it wanted to tell. The connection to the Peramangk land and people, the traditional custodians of the land, was represented through the open fire for cooking and the indigenous artwork within the restaurant.”

What’s your favourite part of the design? “The chef’s table. It was designed to connect patrons to the kitchen. I love the view you get of the chefs preparing your meal, the feel of the marble and the open fire. Dining at LVN is a special culinary experience.”

What’s your favourite dish? “I loved it all, but it has to be the croissant [a twist on a traditional croissant, handmade by chef Jacob Davey to accompany the wallaby main course]. It’s hard to understand how a croissant could be a culinary sensation, but it was absolutely delicious, like nothing I’ve had before.”

And wine? “I’m a big fan of the Bird In Hand TED Chardonnay, and the Marie Elizabeth Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous.”
