A Victorian cottage transformed into a family home

The lacework on the front facade was painstakingly restored to its former grandeur and painted in Dulux White Duck

Built by Scott’s Country Look Kitchens, the classic kitchen offers both style and practicality. Vinyl wrap cabinetry with a matt finish was chosen with a view to durability. A large island bench and splashback in calacatta ‘Michelangelo’ marble from Corsi & Nicolai lend understated elegance. To temper the clean white palette, timber accents were added, including bar stools from Precedence, a decorative African dough trough hanging on the wall and mountain ash floorboards with a dark stain. The finishing touch is an industrial-look pendant from Tarlo & Graham.

The home was renovated to create a stunning open-plan space that drinks in the northern light and the dining zone is the hub of the home. A love for antique style meant the home was furnished with a French oak dining table – custom-made by Zacher Antiques – and a vintage patchwork rug from Loom. Pendant lights from Tarlo & Graham draw the eye to the high ceilings.

The large and light-filled study at the front of the house has a lovely Hamptons feel. To enhance the room’s grand proportions, the walls were painted in Dulux White Duck half-strength with the ceiling in Dulux Natural White. The classic cabinetry and desk were built by Scott’s Country Look Kitchens, while the coffee table came from local store Duck’s Nest.

The study was preserved in its natural state but freshened up with a paint of coat. This is one of the family’s favourite rooms as it overlooks the gardens.

In the new part of the home, homeowners have mixed contemporary decor with period design elements, such as the fireplace surround and feature wall in Mt Angus sandstone. The stone wall adds texture and warmth to the room. Get the look with ‘Crackenback’ walling, $122/sqm, Eco Outdoor.

A kantha quilt – find similar at Down That Little Lane – and contemporary blue ‘Fud’ side tables from Fenton & Fenton catch the eye amongst muted
shades and pared-back pieces. The pendant was salvaged from the Restorers Barn, and was repainted in glossy paint from Aalto. A partition wall conceals the couple’s walk-in robe.

The main bathroom is elegantly appointed with a Missoni bath mat and Marimekko towels from Safari Living. Check out Caroma’s ‘Aura’ bath for a similar freestanding tub.

A sense of adventure fills this room, which is decorated with a vintage map, globes and an insect artwork by Deborah Fisher. The room is part
of the original section of the home and features a panelled ceiling and traditional fireplace which now serves as a display space. The side table is by Kartell and the cheerful bunting is from Tarlo & Graham.
