As the name suggests, the town of Margaret River is nestled alongside a river in Western Australia which winds its way from the Whicher Range to the ocean, attracting big-wave surf enthusiasts. But while the region has dozens of picturesque towns, Margaret River’s proximity to the coastline offers some breathtaking opportunities, alongside vineyards and wineries, art galleries and gourmet delights. Just a three-hour drive from Perth, Margaret River is the perfect spot for a weekend getaway.
Things to do in Margaret River
Margaret River wine tours
Visitors would be remiss for not indulging in a wine tour with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc specialties of the region. A tour operator can take the hassle out of organising the day otherwise a drive around Margaret River will reveal some fantastic wineries.
A ten-minute drive south of Margaret River, Voyager Estate boasts an impressive 170-year farming history focusing on organic produce. Their Chardonnay and Cabernet from the MJW range are elegant and savoury best paired with their seasonal tasting menu. Close by, the Leeuwin Estate offers a weekly cellar door with a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the estate’s winemaking with delightful Chardonnay and Cabernet.
The Margaret River Chocolate Company
A short drive north of Margaret River is where chocolate aficionados will find the delicious Margaret River Chocolate Company. The chocolate factory has been an icon of the region since 1999 and is where you’ll find chocolates and sweet treats all made on-site with plenty of free tastings. Or stop for lunch at the Chocolate Café to enjoy the many other delights like their decadent chocolate brownies, known as the best in Australia.
The Margaret River caves
Hidden near the coastline are four spectacular limestone caves that are home to fossils, stalactites and deep winding chambers that transport visitors to an ancient world. One of the most popular sites is Mammoth Cave in Boranup where fossils of Megafauna can be seen on a self-guided tour. For a breath-taking experience, the Jewel Cave near Augusta has immense crystal chambers with one of the longest straw stalactites making this a must-see stop.
