In recent days, international colour authority Pantone took to Instagram to count down to the announcement of their hotly anticipated Colour of the Year, looking back at the past 12 years and the colours that have been crowned each year and why.
In 2011 PANTONE 18-2120 HONEYSUCKLE, a “dynamic reddish pink” was the chosen hue and now, 12 years on, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta has been crowned the Colour of the Year for 2023, proving that trends really do come full circle.
Described by Pantone as “an unconventional shade for an unconventional time: a new vision”, Viva Magenta is a refreshing pick compared to the pastel and purple hues chosen in previous years.
“PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta writes a new narrative. Brave and fearless, a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes optimism and joy,” Pantone posted to Instagram.
Bold, vivacious and somewhat seductive, Viva Magenta will be the colour on every designer’s lips as we move forward into a fresh year filled with inspiration, ideas and energy.
Interior design trend forecasts suggest bold colour and patterns will make a comeback in 2023 and Pantone’s announcement only confirms this. With Viva Magenta set to influence fashion and interiors in 2023, we can expect a shift toward empowering and energetic hues colouring our worlds.

Other worthy contenders for the Pantone Colour of The Year
Raspberry Blush
US paint company Benjamin Moore were on the money when they labelled ‘Raspberry Blush‘ their 2023 Colour of the Year. The red-orange shade is said to encourage confidence and awaken the senses.
Piccolo
Those who grew up in the 1960s and ’70s may have thought they’d seen the last of mission brown, but this divisive shade is returning to the world of interiors. Designer Sarah Ellison collaborated with Pantone in 2022, unveiling the ‘Float’ sofa in a coffee-inspired shade of brown named ‘Piccolo’.
Digital Lavender
Design publication Architectural Digest had predicted another purple, specifically ‘Digital Lavender’, to be this year’s top contender, an interesting prediction, considering shades of purple were featured by Pantone in 2016 (‘Serenity’), 2018 (‘Ultra Violet’) an again in 2022 (‘Periwinkle’). The prediction came off the back of research conducted by trend forecasting company WGSN alongside Coloro.
