Small bedroom, big ideas

A bedroom's space issues are solved with a canny makeover
Marcel Aucar

At just 3.3m x 3.5m and with a large built-in wardrobe taking up precious space, the old bedroom wasn’t living up to its potential; a queen bed could barely be squeezed in and, on top of that, the decor was tired and dated. Interior designer Michelle Evans from Doherty Design Studio was drafted in to work some space-saving magic.

The first thing to go was the bulky wardrobe, which was too big for the room. Michelle then rearranged the space, incorporating the bed into a wall of cupboards. Wrapped in 2-pac polyurethane and finished in Dulux’s White Watsonia, the cabinetry, built by Desire Kitchens, offers plenty of storage. Wall lights instead of cumbersome table lamps were a canny space-saving choice: these ‘Lanterne’ ones came from Pierre & Charlotte. Casaceco ‘Oakland’ wallpaper from Marco Fabrics and a headboard clad in ‘Mica’ fabric from Mokum add texture. Michelle designed the gold pendant light and lined the interior in Neisha Crosland’s ‘Flamenco’ wallpaper (from Mokum), to add a touch of glamour. Bedlinen from Abode and Bed Bath N’Table provides the final flourish.
